Join Our Farm Team

Midnight’s Farm is looking for a hard-working, experienced person with a positive attitude to join our team. We run a community scale compost operation, raise Murray Grey cross beef cattle and grow an acre of diversified vegetables and berries in an intensive no-till system. Farm values include land stewardship, community and climate mitigation and resilience.

Depending on experience and interest this position(s) could be full or part time and encompass the whole farm or focus in a specific area.   

 

The Work

 

Market Garden:

  • Seedling care

  • Bed preparation and maintenance including spreading compost and tarping

  • Plant out of transplants and direct seeding

  • Pest management and disease monitoring

  • Crop care such as mulching, hoeing, trellising, pruning, installing insect net or reemay and applying foliar applications

  • Harvest of a variety of vegetables, berries and fruit

  • Pack produce for the weekly San Juan Island Food Hub and restaurant orders

  • Sort and grade produce

  • Package produce in the appropriate container (bags, bunches, boxes) and label

  • Assist with recordkeeping related to sales

  • General cleaning: putting away tools, cleaning harvest crates, consolidating trash, etc.

  • Irrigation maintenance

  • General infrastructure maintenance

Cattle: 

  • Set up and take down of electric fence

  • Move cattle into new paddocks

  • Slaughter set up

  • Assist with haying, and field maintenance   

  • In winter- mucking the overwinter area and feeding 

Assorted general farm:

  • Lawn mowing and weed whacking

  • Cleaning the Field House Farm Stay

  • Fire risk reduction

  • Infrastructure maintenance

Compost (depending interest and experience):

  •  Keep the facility orderly and clean (by) 

    • pushing back dropped-off material with loader 

    • monitoring material drop off to assure appropriate material is placed in the appropriate area, 

    • cutting up wood waste that is too long, 

    • organize and tidy shop and associated areas.

  • Keep equipment maintained 

    • greased and fueled

    • help with repairs and scheduled maintenance on equipment as needed 

    • Maintain equipment log in shop

  • Make deliveries

  • Run Charlie the biochar machine

Are you the right fit?

Qualifications:

  • Previous farm experience strongly desired

  • Ability to safely and frequently lift up to 40 pounds

  • Ability to work independently

  • Enjoys working in a collaborative team environment

  • Ability to work and talk at the same time

  • Ability and willingness to ask questions, 

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Interest, curiosity, and willingness to learn

  • Interest and commitment to climate action

 

Compensation & Perks

  • Pay depends on experience and duties starting from $16.50

  • Farm lunches are provided to all crew who work a full day.
