About Us

Midnight's Farm is home to Down Dog
Studio, gardens, orchards, chickens, grass-fed beef, a green waste facility,
and David's landscaping/excavating business.  It is also the home to David
Bill, daughters, Vilina Sanburn-Bill and Ani Sanburn-Bill, Sara Gerlitz, Nic
Lorge, Sara Ficklin, Don Burt and LeAnne LeAnne Gros-Jacques-Burt.  Oh, and our dogs,
Midnight and Lucy. The Yoga Studio was built with help of many
hands, during yoga retreats, weekend workshops and is a way of sharing the
practice and some quiet beauty with others. The beef cattle keep food on the
table, the pastures grazed and fertilized, and provide a nitrogen source for
the compost.  This compost is turned back on the farm as a powerful
nutrient, and is used in some of our off-site gardening projects.
Providing excavating and landscaping services to others was a natural
outgrowth of the pleasure and experience from working the land here, an
interest in green development, a love of plants, and the ability to quickly transform
a landscape, and yes, large toys...

Beginning in 1964, David Bill spent
summers and weekends on Lopez raising sheep, plowing land, and generally
messing around.  He's made Midnight's Farm his home for the last 20 plus
years.  His work is informed by:

  • A love of working outdoors, both
farming, and in more natural settings.
  • An enjoyment of food, the
agricultural setting, and the richness of food from our neighborhood.
  • An environmental/civil engineering
    degree (MIT).
  • An interest in solutions to reduce
the atmospheric buildup of greenhouse gases. (He authored a book, entitled
"Practical Home Energy Savings" for the Rocky Mountain Institute.)
  • A scottish frugality manifesting as
a desire efficient solutions made more powerful by working extensively on his
own property, and also working as treasurer for the Lopez Community Land Trust
during the construction of Loho and Morgantown and the Preschool when it
undertook the fundraising and design of the Lopez Children's Center.
  • Pleasure and knowledge derived from
collaborating with owners and other contractors to bring the best resources to
    the specific job.
