A Hint of Spring

By |February 21st, 2014|

Even though the forecast is for snow this weekend, we can feel spring on its way.  The first brave flowers are opening in the warm spots.  Bare branches swell at the tips with the promise of leaf and flower. And at night the frogs are beginning to sing in the marsh, not the deafening chorus that will come later but individuals warming up.

Nikola skating on the marsh

It is always a treat when we have a hard freeze.  We get the box of old skates out of the barn, dust the cobwebs off and head down to the marsh.  As we cut our first tracks into the ice and it popped and cracked beneath us.  We know if we fall through we would only end up with wet cold feet.  We enjoy the thrill and wind our way through the tufts of grass into the smooth glassy center.  Looking down the ice opens into a magical world of rushes and water bugs.
